In 2005 a new development, part of the Evolution Quarter of what was formerly the North Peckham Estate was burnt to the ground when a fire started on the site and destroyed the partially built homes that were part of the Berkely Homes new build.

This time around there is a similar event – as before it is thought that gas canisters exploded and from here on Calypso Crescent at 4:30 this morning it did sound like it, with people evacuated and damage to inhabited properties.

Take a look at the pictures below, some from 2005 and some from now, so close together geographically and so similar is their seeming cause. Dies something need to be done in terms of safety inspections when there is so much work going on in such a built up area – have a look at the new Tuke School development that is also going on and then there is also the demolition in progress of the last parts of the North Peckham Estate (these are parts that have been baorded off, and so surreptitiously inhabited, for some time now.)

Excitement Surrounding Film and Early Reviews Drives Record-Setting Advance IMAX Ticket Sales

IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that the studio’s highly anticipated and technologically unprecedented summer movie, The Dark Knight, starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, and directed by Christopher Nolan, will open in a record 94 IMAX(R) theatres domestically on July 18th in conjunction with the film’s wide release. The film will also open in 15 IMAX theatres day-and-date internationally, with at least 23 additional international locations opening in the coming weeks.

The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience features six sequences filmed with IMAX(R) cameras, the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras, marking a revolutionary integration of the two film formats. The worldwide premiere of the film will be held at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 with IMAX in New York on July 14th, the first time a Hollywood feature film has premiered in an IMAX theatre.

Advance IMAX ticket sales demonstrate the huge enthusiasm surrounding the movie:

- Advance IMAX ticket sales have already surpassed $2 million, more than a week prior to opening
- Over 100 shows are already sold out
- 93 domestic IMAX theatres have added midnight screenings
- Many IMAX theatres in the USA are adding 3am shows, and some are screening non-stop for 24 hours to meet the high moviegoer demands
- Chicago’s Navy Pier and the Palisades Center (West Nyack, NY) IMAX theatres will run shows non-stop for 72 hours

Sequences shot in traditional 35mm have been digitally re-mastered into The IMAX Experience(R) with proprietary IMAX DMR(R) technology. The two formats will be seamlessly integrated and morph between IMAX and IMAX DMR. In other words, scenes shot in 35mm will appear in IMAX DMR (letterbox), while scenes shot with IMAX’s cameras on 15/70mm film will expand vertically to fill the entire IMAX screen, which can be up to eight stories tall, for an all-encompassing IMAX Experience.

With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as the Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces the Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.

Christian Bale reprises his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman; Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger (“Brokeback Mountain”) stars as arch-villain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays District Attorney Harvey Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast in the role of Rachel Dawes. As part of the promotion for the new Batman movie ‘The Dark Knight’, Italian Toyota driver Jarno Trulli raced against the movie’s Batmobile marking the partnership between the Toyota team and Warner Bros. Pictures.

‘The Dark Knight’ is the follow up to 2005′s ‘Batman Begins’ which stars Christian Bale as the film’s eponymous hero. The death of actor Heath Ledger soon after he completed filming for his role of The Joker is likely to overshadow a lot of the movie’s promotion.

With less than three weeks remaining till “The Dark Knight” opens on July 18, at 12:01 a.m., Fandango, the nation’s leading moviegoer destination, is finding that dozens of showtimes for the film are already sold out.

“The Dark Knight” tickets have been a hot commodity since they first went on sale on Friday, June 20 at Fandango.com. As of this morning, the film is outpacing “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, “Iron Man” and “Sex and the City” as Fandango’s fastest ticket-seller of this summer.

“We are currently seeing a surge in advance ticket sales for ‘The Dark Knight’,” says Ted Hong, vice president of marketing for Fandango. “It makes sense that there’s a rush for tickets, as it’s the perfect movie to see on the big screen, as supported by our strong ticket sales for both traditional screens and the larger format in IMAX (R). We believe the film is appealing to both comic book and action fans, as well as casual moviegoers.”

The late Heath Ledger’s potentially Oscar(R)-worthy performance as The Joker in “The Dark Knight” was cited as top reason for seeing the movie, according to 53% of respondents to Fandango’s online survey of moviegoers in June.

“We had to do something to deal with the question of absentee voters,” said City Councilwoman Manya Alarnian. “And we believe that permitting secure, tamper-proof voting online will broaden the pool of voters and raise Gotham voter turnout which had hit rock-bottom in recent years.”

And voters seem to be responding. The Gotham Election Board reports that interest in the online voting has skyrocketed in recent weeks. A spokesman said that the office has been flooded with voters from all over the world that want to remain connected to Gotham politics.

“This is great news,” said prospective voter Regina Filleps, a longtime Gotham citizen who can’t make it back to the city on election day. “I am working outside of Gotham for a little while because I couldn’t find a good job in the city, but I still want to help improve the standard of living there by making my voice heard. After all, I grew up in Farrow!”

GEB staffmember Edmund Schnii visited the Gotham Retirement Villa to help ensure that their decreased-mobility residents wouldn’t be counted out on election day. “These people aren’t too old to vote,” said Schnii. “They just need a little push in the right direction.”

The voting includes a number of propositions which need to be decided ranging from infrastructure projects for the Narrows through to pay rises for the Gotham Police Department, currently struggling under a crime wave and the appearance of the Dark Knight vigilante – The Batman.
