HDR Photography and Tone Mapping

High dynamic range imaging was originally developed in the 1930s and 1940s by Charles Wyckoff. Wyckoff’s detailed pictures of nuclear explosions appeared on the cover of Life magazine in the mid 1940s.
The process of tone mapping together with bracketed exposures of normal digital images, giving the end result a high, often exaggerated dynamic range, was first reported in 1988 and by 1997 this technique of combining several differently exposed images to produce a single HDR image was presented to the computer graphics community by Paul Debevec.

Tone Mapped Photographs – June

Here’s a selection of photos taken with a Canon 40D and various lenses and then processed using tone mapping software.

Especially good this month are the images of the gin still taken at 3 Mills Island studio complex in Bromley By Bow.

Clambering around on the upper gantry, about 50 feet up, in one of the spaces while taking photos of Tangled Feet theatre company in rehearsals the view of the still was amazing.

Clock Opera at 93 Feet East

They say it is ‘frenetic, bleep ridden, synth rock’ (TimeOut) but I say its just a great night out listening to raw creativity.
Guy Connelly and the Rock Opera crew were out again last night (10 June) at 83 Feet East along with Magic & Fur, A.Human and Dead Monroe.
I got there too late for the last two acts, due to crawling around on a gantry photographing Tangled Feet, but did catch Magic & Fur who really do need to be watched in the future too.

Party Ben – This Way To Party

He’s coming to Europe for the Volt Festival in July and if that wasn’t good enough Party Ben has put together a new long mix ‘ to celebrate…life’.

Party Ben, for those that havent heard of him (and where have you been?) is one of the biggest figures on the mashup scene.

A resident DJ at Bootie in SF and also admired by Chris Moyles here in the UK he has been responsible for such classic mashups as Every Car You Chase by Snow Police, American Idiot by Dean Gray and many many more.

Mashup – Norwegian Recycling – Green Day vs Jack Johnson (plus many more)

Eight songs that on their own are so-so but once they are mashed become something totally different.

This is Acoustic Alchemy and the wizard behind it – Norwegian Recylcing – has once again done the seemingly impossible.

This has the same level of quality as the previous ‘How Six Songs Collide’ which you can hear over on Youtube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JKKl95Ttrc

Abandoned – San Zhi – Taiwan

San Zhi, Taiwan is an abandoned vacation resort on the northern coast of Taiwan. It was built in the early 1980s, but construction of the futuristic resort ceased after a series of fatal accidents. People who have travelled to this resort, didn’t go on vacation, because the resort never opened to the public.

Even though it didn’t open as a vacation resort, San Zhi can still be toured. The strange pod-like buildings act as an awesome tourist area. The colors of the pod-like buildings depend on their location.
